Improving reading in KS2 – What works?

For Primary Head Teachers, English Subject Leaders and KS2 Teachers

Presented by Pie Corbett, supported by Julia Strong

This conference, made up of all new material, will explore how to raise standards in reading by providing practical comprehension strategies and systems that work. We will draw upon methods used in schools that, despite being in areas of high deprivation, scored very highly in last year’s SATs. The day will cover the following key areas: the central role of reading for pleasure; shared and guided reading; direct teaching of reading; test familiarity and establishing whole school systems.

Talk for Writing in EY and KS1

For Primary Head Teachers, English subject leaders, Nursery, Foundation and KS1 Teachers

Presented by Pie Corbett, supported by Julia Strong

This conference will focus on practical strategies for developing young children as storytellers and writers. We will look at how to help children learn a bank of stories through story mapping, using actions and deepening understanding through play. From Nursery to year 2, we will explore approaches to helping children develop their own creative versions of well-known stories and poems both orally and through writing. Using examples and film clips of shared and guided writing, the conference will also consider how to help children create their own imaginative stories. These conferences have previously sold out rapidly and proved to be very popular as they demonstrate how to teach the National Curriculum in an imaginative and effective way.

Talk for Writing across the curriculum for pupils of all ages – with a focus on maths and science

For Primary and Secondary Headteachers and senior managers, leading teachers with curriculum responsibilities and primary teachers (including ‘literacy across the curriculum’ as well as teachers of maths / science).

Presented by Julia Strong and Pie Corbett, supported by maths and science teachers from both primary and secondary schools

This groundbreaking, interactive conference will demonstrate how Talk for Writing has been used successfully in both primary and secondary schools across the curriculum. The opening session will illustrate the Talk for Writing process, showing how it can be adapted to suit the language patterns and thought processes of any subject both in primary and secondary schools to teach different subjects. To make progress in any subject, pupils need the relevant language patterns to think and express themselves. Talk for Writing can be a game changer in terms of raising standards across the curriculum.

In the second session, Pie will introduce two maths experts, Sonia Thompson (deputy headteacher, St Matthew’s C of E Primary School, Birmingham) and Uzma Southern (head of maths at Slough and Eton C of E Business & Enterprise College) who will illustrate the approach in maths.

In the afternoon session, Julia introduces two science experts, Tom Wriglesworth (teacher, Selby Community Primary School, Yorkshire) and a secondary science teacher, from Slough and Eton C of E Business & Enterprise College, illustrating how the approach supports science. The day will end with some practical activities that can be adapted to suit the needs of learners in any subject.

Using Talk for Writing with special educational needs pupils

This conference focuses on using Talk for Writing with KS2 pupils who have Moderate Learning Difficulties, as well as those who work with deaf pupils who have significant language delay (primary and secondary). It would also be useful for teachers who work in mainstream schools with pupils who have special needs.

Presented by Pie Corbett and two SEND teachers

Pie will explore how the Talk for Writing approach can help children with special educational needs fulfil their potential. In the afternoon session, a teacher of children who are deaf and the Head of The Harbour Centre, a specialist centre for children with learning difficulties, will illustrate the dramatic impact of the approach on the children’s language development, confidence, composition and writing.

The Roving Books Children’s Bookshop attends all of Pie Corbett’s Talk4Writing conferences in order to give delegates the opportunity to see and buy a wonderful range of children’s books and Talk for Writing publications by Pie Corbett and Julia Strong.

The conferences all begin at 9.30 and end at 3.30. We always try to seat delegates around tables so that they have a surface to make notes on.
