Upcoming Talk for Writing conferences

Talk for Writing in KS2

For Primary Head Teachers, English subject leaders and KS2 Teachers

Presented by Pie Corbett

This conference will focus on practical strategies for developing children as storytellers, poetry performers and writers. We will look at the link between learning model texts, drawing on quality literature and developing the craft of writing. The conference will explore how to help children deepen their understanding of what makes good writing, building up a store of patterns and writing techniques. We’ll look at film clips of shared writing and consider how spelling and grammar can be taught purposefully in relation to writing. The day will provide teachers with a bank of imaginative ideas for developing children’s confidence as creative and inventive writers.

Price per delegate all conference (except London): £195.00 +VAT
Price per delegate in London: £225 +VAT

Writing in EYFS & KS1 – Bold Beginnings

For Primary Headteachers, English Subject Leaders, Nursery Teachers, Reception Teachers and KS1 Teachers

Presented by Pie Corbett

What does the effective development of early oral and written composition look like and how is this built upon across KS1 to secure good progress and high standards? This conference will be based upon practical research and development work carried out in Talk for Writing centres that has looked at how to use our EYFS literacy checklist as a basis for developing imaginative stories through teaching and play. How do we develop children’s creative composition alongside learning the core skills of handwriting and early spelling within a balanced and rich curriculum?

Leadership – Raising literacy standards in schools

For Primary Headteachers, English Subject Leaders and Primary Teachers

Presented by Pie Corbett

This conference, presented by Pie Corbett with input from a Talk for Writing training school, will focus on the processes that need to be initiated, developed and maintained if you are to raise achievement in your school using the Talk for Writing approach. All the material for the conference has been refined through discussion with successful Headteachers and leading literacy teachers of schools who have used the approach to significantly raise attainment across all subjects in their schools. The conference will focus especially on what makes a difference for schools that serve more challenging areas. Whilst we will be focusing on key strategies used in Talk for Writing, these are reflected in the National Curriculum programmes of study.

Talk for Writing in the Foundation Stage and KS1

For Primary Headteachers, English Subject Leaders, Foundation Stage Teachers and KS1 Teachers

Presented by Pie Corbett

This conference will focus on practical strategies for developing young children as storytellers and writers.

We will look at how to help children learn a bank of stories through story mapping, using actions and deepening understanding through play.

From P1 to P4, we will explore approaches to helping children develop their own creative versions of well-known stories and poems both orally and through writing. Using examples and film clips of shared and guided writing, the conference will also consider how to help children create their own imaginative stories.

Greater Depth Writing KS2

For Primary Headteachers, English Subject Leaders, KS2 and KS3 Teachers

Presented by Pie Corbett

This conference will focus on the key approaches needed to develop children’s writing to greater depth across KS2. We will explore how deep and rich reading influences writing and look at strategies for creative reading, reading as a writer and composing in the style of great authors.

We will also look at how KS2 writers raid their reading to develop their writing, explore the role of shared and guided writing and consider short-burst writing as a strategy to develop a young writer’s ability to manipulate their audience and create different effects.

Finally, we will consider independent planning, the role of formative assessment and how to use challenging and engaging starting points for pupils to write imaginatively and independently.

The Roving Books Children’s Bookshop attends all of Pie Corbett’s Talk for Writing conferences in order to give delegates the opportunity to see and buy a wonderful range of children’s books and Talk for Writing publications by Pie Corbett and Julia Strong.

The conferences all begin at 9.30 and end at 3.30. We always try to seat delegates around tables so that they have a surface to make notes on.
