Quality Independent Writing at KS2

For Primary Headteachers, English subject leaders and KS2 teachers.

Presented by Pie Corbett

How do you teach and guide children to develop as independent, imaginative writers?

This conference will explore the notion of ‘reading as a writer’ so children learn to draw upon great literature and well-crafted models as a resource for their writing. A key focus of the day will be using shared writing to demonstrate how to write powerfully and independently, drawing on what has been taught. The role of different strategies for using shared writing to teach children how to plan, draft, edit and evaluate their own composition will be highlighted; alongside exploring how to teach grammar to enhance meaning.

The final session of the day will run through a sequence of powerful ideas that engage children and stimulate great writing. There will be plenty of creative starting points for stories and poetry that grabs the imagination.

An introduction to Talk for Writing

For Primary Headteachers, English Subject Leaders and Primary Teachers

Presented by Pie Corbett

This conference will provide an introduction to the Talk for Writing approach with a focus on story writing. We will look at how to use assessment to focus teaching as well as developing a creative context that captures children’s imagination. We will consider the role of model texts as well as exploring linking grammar and spelling into writing. Pie will focus on shared and guided writing as central aspects of developing young writers. The day will end with using formative assessment to grow children’s ability to edit and improve their own writing. The conference will be packed with practical ideas for creative teaching and provide a whole school, coherent system for teaching writing.

Improving reading in KS2 – What works?

For Primary Head Teachers, English Subject Leaders and KS2 Teachers

Presented by Pie Corbett

This conference will explore how to raise standards in reading by providing practical comprehension strategies and systems that work. We will draw upon methods used in schools that, despite being in areas of high deprivation, scored very highly in last year’s SATs. The day will cover the following key areas: the central role of reading for pleasure; shared and guided reading; direct teaching of reading; test familiarity and establishing whole school systems.

The conference is being re-run in 2018 due to demand from schools and following outstanding feedback when it was run in the 2017.

Talk for Writing in EY and KS1

For Primary Head Teachers, English subject leaders, Nursery, Foundation and KS1 Teachers

Presented by Pie Corbett

This conference will focus on practical strategies for developing young children as storytellers and writers. We will look at how to help children learn a bank of stories through story mapping, using actions and deepening understanding through play. From Nursery to year 2, we will explore approaches to helping children develop their own creative versions of well-known stories and poems both orally and through writing. Using examples and film clips of shared and guided writing, the conference will also consider how to help children create their own imaginative stories. These conferences have previously sold out rapidly and proved to be very popular as they demonstrate how to teach the National Curriculum in an imaginative and effective way.

The Roving Books Children’s Bookshop attends all of Pie Corbett’s Talk4Writing conferences in order to give delegates the opportunity to see and buy a wonderful range of children’s books and Talk for Writing publications by Pie Corbett and Julia Strong.

The conferences all begin at 9.30 and end at 3.30. We always try to seat delegates around tables so that they have a surface to make notes on.
