Joanne is passionate about Talk for Writing and the huge impact it can have on children’s lives, particularly within disadvantaged areas.
Until recently, Joanne was Lead Teacher at Warren Farm Primary in Kingstanding, Birmingham, where she embedded Talk for Writing across the curriculum and established the school as a Talk for Writing Training Centre. Through teaching and formative assessment, Joanne was able to witness first hand the impact Talk for Writing can have on children’s writing standards.
Joanne has also delivered a range of bespoke training within several schools across the Midlands. This also involved working with senior leadership teams to develop action plans and monitoring and observing staff.
Having worked in education for 16 years, Joanne has a wealth of experience in teaching and supporting staff in primary literacy. During her time as both a Leading Literacy Teacher for Birmingham LEA and as an EYFS consultant, Joanne raised literacy standards within several settings. As an EYFS consultant, Joanne worked with several schools to develop speaking and listening strategies and raise attainment in phonics.
Joanne has worked with Pie on several Talk for Writing research projects, including looking at how Talk for Writing can be integrated into other areas across the curriculum and how toolkits can develop children’s writing.
Joanne can offer advice and training on a range of issues, including:
- An introduction to the Talk for Writing process
- How to establish Talk for Writing across the curriculum
- Short burst writing and poetry
- Planning and monitoring Talk for Writing
- Talk for Writing within the Early Years
