1. Grammar never-heard-the-word Grid

If you’re teaching grammar, as with any teaching, it’s important to establish what the children already know and what needs to be taught. Use the never-heard-the-word grid with your class in order to establish which of the key grammar terms need teaching, or which the children have understood from previous grammar lessons.¬†.

Do you know your co-ordinating conjunctions from your subordinating conjunctions and your fronted adverbials? This two-page guide written by Julia Strong, co-author of Jumpstart! Grammar, goes through each of the different ways of linking text together with an eye to what the children are expected to know for the grammar test.

4. Involving ParentsCS6
.
It can sometimes be tricky to get parents into school. One useful, non-threatening approach you could use as a start point is to have a sorting activity on pieces of card with a number of suggestions for reading activities that parents might like to try with their child. Here we provided a selection of cards with ideas to use. There are more ideas for involving parents and families in the Talk for Writing in the Early Years- How to teach story and rhyme, involving families book.
